Untitled (blue woman pleasure)

Influenced by Picasso’s period of cubism, and surrealism and De Kooning’s abstract expressionism,  Martha paints biomorphic shapes. Martha is great at ambiguously blending figure and ground in her pictures while dismembering, re-assembling and distorting her figures in the process.

Perhaps, this is one of the most unapologetic paintings by the artist.  In this painting a woman is touching herself.  The artist painted her with her mouth wide open, a red tongue, her vagina, also bright red, and nipples as well.  Her legs are lifted straight, and strong, up high.  Her upper body is straight and squared forward.  One eye looks down, the other straight forward.  This is for sure a very aggressive, sexual, in your face painting.  The colors are in blues and grays, and some light yellows, beautifully and elegantly mixed and blended together.
