The Naked Supplication of Marta

Influenced by Picasso’s period of cubism, and surrealism and De Kooning’s abstract expressionism,  Martha paints biomorphic shapes. Martha is great at ambiguously blending figure and ground in her pictures while dismembering, re-assembling and distorting her figures in the process.

Terrible things in the news.  People killing each other.  Hurting each other.

Think of a supplication as sort of a prayer, a request for help from a deity. The word carries a sense of awe and adoration with it, suggesting something tentative, even servile, a respectful appeal to a higher power.

She begs for understanding.
