Influenced by Picasso’s period of cubism, and surrealism and De Kooning’s abstract expressionism, Martha paints biomorphic shapes. Martha is great at ambiguously blending figure and ground in her pictures while dismembering, re-assembling and distorting her figures in the process.
The artist paints a young boy, again with big oval eyes. The paint strokes are fast, hectic colorful and a bit disturbing. The boy is or has finished masturbating. There is guilt, confusion...The artist paints his arms red, symbolizing strenght, confusion, passion, heat...but she leaves the arms unfinished, almost bleeding, or melting.
