Forbidden Fruit

Influenced by Picasso’s period of cubism, and surrealism and De Kooning’s abstract expressionism,  Martha paints biomorphic shapes. Martha is great at ambiguously blending figure and ground in her pictures while dismembering, re-assembling and distorting her figures in the process.

The artist paints two characters close together, but not touching.  The masculine subject has a horse's hoof.  This symbolizes man's animal instinct.  It is painted in reds, to show pain, or somehow being broken.
