A MAN AND A WOMAN APART

Influenced by Picasso’s period of cubism, and surrealism and De Kooning’s abstract expressionism,  Martha paints biomorphic shapes. Martha is great at ambiguously blending figure and ground in her pictures while dismembering, re-assembling and distorting her figures in the process.

This piece is a two piece painting.  One painting is of a man who's dressed.  The other painting is of a woman who's nude.  They are together, yet at the same time, they are apart.  Two pieces that are one, represent two people who compliment each other, who are their own individuals, who are so close and yet so far and yet who make one whole.
